Fascinating Holidays Celebrated Around the World

Every public holiday tells a story. The dates a country chooses to mark reflect its history, religion, political identity, and collective memory. Understanding a nation's holidays is one of the quickest ways to understand its culture. From the solemnity of Remembrance Day to the colour-drenched chaos of Holi, holidays reveal what a society considers sacred, worth celebrating, or worth remembering.

Christmas is observed in some form in over 160 countries, making it the most globally widespread holiday. Even in non-Christian majority countries like Japan and South Korea, Christmas has become a commercially significant cultural event. New Year's Day is perhaps the only holiday truly universal in scope — celebrated across nearly every calendar system, from the Gregorian January 1 to the Lunar New Year and the Persian Nowruz.

Thailand's Songkran (Thai New Year) involves the world's largest water fight, symbolising the washing away of bad luck. Ethiopia celebrates Christmas on January 7 following the Julian calendar. Iran's Nowruz has been celebrated for over 3,000 years and marks the Persian New Year on the spring equinox. Japan's Golden Week in late April and early May clusters four national holidays together, creating the country's longest holiday break.

Some countries have a predominantly religious public holiday calendar, while others lean secular. Saudi Arabia's national holidays are almost entirely Islamic. France, since its revolutionary era, has kept religion largely out of the official calendar. Many countries strike a balance — India recognises holidays from Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Sikh, and Buddhist traditions, reflecting its pluralistic identity. This mix shapes workplace culture, school calendars, and even stock market schedules.

For travellers, business professionals, and remote workers, awareness of public holidays is essential. Booking flights to peak-holiday destinations in advance can save hundreds of dollars. Understanding that some countries shut down almost entirely for certain periods — like China's Golden Week or France in August — prevents costly scheduling mistakes. Our holiday calendars cover 20+ countries so you can plan ahead with confidence.
