URL Encoder/Decoder
Encode or decode URL strings
About the URL Encoder/Decoder
The URL Encoder/Decoder converts text to and from percent-encoding, the format used to put spaces, symbols and non-English characters safely into web addresses and query strings.
How it works
Encoding uses JavaScript's encodeURIComponent: every character other than letters, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ) is replaced by % followed by its UTF-8 bytes in hexadecimal. A space becomes %20, & becomes %26 and é becomes %C3%A9. Decoding reverses the process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is a space sometimes + instead of %20?
HTML form submissions encode spaces as +. Standard percent-encoding uses %20. Both are common in query strings.
Q. Should I encode a whole URL?
Usually not. Encode individual parameter values; encoding the whole URL also encodes the :// and / characters.
Q. Why did decoding fail?
The input contains a % that isn't followed by two valid hex digits, so it isn't valid percent-encoding.
